Tigger is an exuberant, one-of-a-kind creature. He acts on every impulse, and his boisterous manner often leads him to leap before he looks. When Tigger is in a bouncing mood, it’s his way of expressing his zeal and zest for life as well as his affection for his dear friends. Tigger is never one to shy away from an adventure and he is always eager to have fun with Christopher Robin, Winnie the Pooh, and friends. Tigger is 23″ tall, just a bit taller than Pooh, and by his own proclamation, his top half is made out of rubber and his bottom is made out of springs. Hence, his very favorite thing to do is bounce, “cause that’s what Tiggers do best.” His rather impulsive behavior quite often leads to mayhem and mishaps and if you’re not careful, you could very easily end up with Tigger in your lap! Take a look at Tigger’s antics on this video while he sings his signature song as a means of introducing himself.
The bouncy Tigger is not introduced until Alan Alexander Milne’s second book, The House at Pooh Corner, in the 2nd chapter entitled, In Which Tigger Comes to the Forest and Has Breakfast. Like Pooh, Piglet, Eeyore, Kanga, and Little Roo, Tigger was another of Christopher Robin’s stuffed animals but Tigger didn’t show up in the nursery until around 1927 which explains why he didn’t appear in A.A. Milne’s first book, Winnie the Pooh, because it was published in 1926, a year before Tigger came onto the scene. While much of Tigger’s high-energy character as we know it today was actually developed by Walt Disney, It is established early on in the original text that Tigger loves to bounce. Tigger’s unbridled energy and enthusiasm apparently becomes too much for Rabbit and Piglet, and perhaps even Pooh, that in chapter 7 of The House at Pooh Corner, entitled In Which Tigger is Unbounced, Rabbit exclaims, “Tigger’s getting so Bouncy nowadays that it’s time we taught him a lesson.” Quite sadly, Rabbit’s idea is to break Tigger’s spirit, which he nicely refers to as being “unbounced.” Rabbit’s idea was to draw Tigger into an unfamiliar part of the Woods where he would get lost, leave him there overnight, and then “find” him again in the morning expecting that the feelings of fear and abandonment that Tigger would surely experience would humble him, sadden him, and take the “bounce” out of him. In the end, Rabbit is the one who get’s lost, and who works the hardest to find him? Tigger. And when Tigger does find him, it’s Rabbit who feels humbled and he realizes that Bouncy Tigger is perfect just the way he is.
